Background.

JBP has been helping EUMETSAT, Europe’s meteorological satellite agency, to launch the new generation of weather observation capability, which provides more frequent and detailed imagery to support the monitoring and forecasting of rapidly developing weather conditions.

Its second Meteosat Third Generation Imager satellite, MTG-I2, provides imagery of Europe every 2.5 minutes, offering a much faster view of changing conditions

We collaborated with Belgian/European PR agency Insticom, one of our partners in the international PR network, Worldcom, with partners from Spain, France, Italy and Germany also involved in the project.

Our role was to help translate a highly technical European space and meteorology story into compelling angles for UK media, identify the journalists most likely to cover the announcement and conduct targeted media outreach around the initial briefing and the successful launch that followed.

Plan of action.

  • Identifying the strongest UK angles – JBP reviewed the announcement and supporting material to identify the elements most likely to resonate with UK audiences, particularly the satellite’s role in monitoring extreme and rapidly developing weather.
  • Building and refining the media list – We developed a targeted UK media list spanning national news, science, space, weather, environment, agriculture and specialist publications, alongside relevant broadcasters and podcasts.
  • Prioritising the strongest opportunities – We identified the journalists and outlets most likely to engage with the story based on their areas of interest and previous reports they have produced.
  • Creating tailored pitches – JBP developed individual approaches for priority target media, adapting the emphasis depending on their audience. These ranged from the science and technology behind the satellite to the potential benefits of 2.5-minute imagery for weather forecasting and monitoring fast-developing conditions.
  • Supporting media engagement – We helped promote EUMETSAT’s pre-launch media briefing and subsequently supported outreach around the launch announcement, responding to interest and helping ensure relevant journalists received the information they needed, including responding to requests for expert commentary and answers to questions.

Results.

We were able to help provide EUMETSAT with specialist knowledge of the UK media landscape. Numerous positive pieces of coverage have been secured, with more in the pipeline.

JBP helped give the announcement a clear UK focus, placing the most newsworthy elements of a complex technical story at the forefront of media outreach and ensuring that priority media targets received approaches tailored to their individual interests.

The project also demonstrated the value of the Worldcom network in enabling international organisations to combine central campaign coordination with on-the-ground local media expertise.
